Should you get help filing your taxes?
Taxes are something that everybody hates and a big part of the reason is that filing your return is an enormous hassle. This is why a lot of people get somebody else to do it on their behalf. There are lots of people who can do this so if you want but that assumes that you actually need help. So do you really need help filing your taxes?
Whether or not you should get help filing your taxes is really going to depend on how complicated your taxes are. If your only source of income is your job and you have no deductions to take then it is probably not worth it to pay somebody to help you. On the other hand if you have lots of investment income in addition to your salary and you have a lot of deductions then you are almost certainly going to need help filing your taxes. If you do need help then the question becomes who are you going to get help from?
The first option that you have when it comes to getting help filing your taxes is from your accountant. If you have a fairly complicated tax situation then there is a good chance that your whole financial life is complicated as well. In that case you probably already have an accountant anyway. In many cases they will help you to file your tax return. However you should keep in mind that many accountants are not experts in taxes so they may not provide the best possible advice. Most accountants will refer you to somebody else if your taxes are too complicated for them to handle.
The next option that you have for help filing your taxes is those tax preparation places that you see in the malls. This can actually be a good option for a lot of people if their taxes are not too complicated. If they are complicated enough that you aren't comfortable doing it yourself but not so complicated that they require a true expert this is an affordable and convenient way to get your taxes done. Most of the people working there have a couple of months of training and can handle most of the issues that the average person would have with their taxes.
Your last option when it comes to getting your taxes done is an enrolled agent, these are the true experts in taxes and are generally only used in the most complex cases. An enrolled agent has the right to represent tax payers before the IRS, in order to do this they have to pass a series of very comprehensive exams. Most enrolled agents have previously worked for the IRS so they really know how the system works. Not only can they file your taxes for you but they can represent you in the event that you are audited.
